Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics
Before creating and making are music video I did a number research into a variety of music videos and genres. A recurring music video genre which came cropping up was Rap. Rap is one of the leading music genres with teenagers and young adults. During the research an planning stage I looked and the Auteur Theory into Joseph Kahn and also looking into a star analysis of Eminem. In his music video 'Love the way you lie' the director Joseph Kahn had shown a divided between the artist and the story. He did think by keeping the artist on them own.
(Top Love the way you lie - Eminem 0:26)
(Middle Never let the party stop - HB 0:03 and 1:09)
(Bottom I turn to you & In Da Club)
(Bottom I turn to you & In Da Club)

We choose to have some mise en scene in a recording studio becuase we had seen it in some other music video genres, Rap 50 cent 'In Da Club' and Pop in Christina Aguilera 'I turn to you'. We decided we wanted to do a shot like this however, bringing the two together by no covering up the face and putting it on at an angle.
There is Relationship between lyrics and visuals
There is Relationship between lyrics and visuals
Throughout the music video we wanted to show a link between lyrics and visuals. When look at the lyrics we high lights a number of key words we/ the actor could represent through gestures, For example,
"Fly like a jet, H to the B year I'm flyer than all the rest'. When the artist says fly we could point to shy or make his arms look like wings.
Another phrase we highlighted was "here we go," we though we could symbolise this with the character if in stead of walking towards the camera he could be walking away or walked out of shot. this would be a signification different because this could be the first time he walks out of shot.
Looking through there was another symbol we could use which was the thumbs up to represent 'OK'.
Another way we wanted to show a clear relationship between lyrical and visual was the line ' Steppin' on the scene with the red and white on.' Through mise en scene, making the artist where a white t-shirt with a small red logo which was worn through all character sections and is seen shown it the the camera when the line is delivered.
There is a relationship between music and visual
During the Music video we wanted to show a relationship between music and visual that is why the main character lip synced for most of the song. During the opening sequence the music is non-diegetic, this is where the character on screen can not hear the music. After this the music becomes diegetic, where the character and the audience can hear it, this was shown to the audience by lip syncing. During the "backstage" scenes "HB" was seen not lip syncing the is because the music has gone back to non-diegetic. However, through out the music video there is a recurring scene of "HB" in a recording studio this is diegetic. When it is diegetic the is a relationship between the music a visual either through lip syncing or "HB" in a recording studio.

(Middle: Artists lip syncing)

Another way which we showed a relationship between music and visual was during one of the opening scenes you see "HB" in the recording studio bobbing his head to the music. This clearly shows the audience that he can hear the music through his headphones.
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.
we have used a variety of close ups and extreme close ups to make the audience feel more closer to "HB". We also changed the angles of the close ups and extreme close ups to make it fill like you where seeing "HB" from all angles.
A Motif is a recurring images which will be scene through out the music video. During our music video we have a recurring image of female lips through. This is an Extreme close up, which we took from all angles. Another image which was motif was the image of "HB" in the Recording studio. This was taken from one angle and was a close up. Having these images acer through the audience has something the look back on when appear, it also gives them time to think about what is happening in the story.
We also did a point of view shot from "HB" this was used to show "HB" eye line and to let the audience look at the world from "HB" view. This shot was also used to show him signing a fan an autograph which if a non famous person meets a famous person we do this so we have something more than our memories.
This was also do when the camera was looking at "HB" he then put his thumb up to symbolise he was ready. The camera then does a 180 degrees turn to see who he is looking at and what they are doing.
Voyeuristic is the sexual interest. As this as A2 coursework we did not what to have anything which we felt was inappropriate and it may take away from good. However, looking a Florence & the Machine "You've got the love" there is a shot in the video where it is a extreme close up of her hand. This could be scene as sexual.
We then went on to think about what we could uses in our video and we thought about the chorus and this is where we got the lip idea. We then expanded on that by put on big red/ pink lip stick to highlight a sexual nature.
There is often intertexual reference
In are music video "HB" is seen wearing 'Architects' t-shirt and a 'White She Sleep varsity jacket. These are both British bands which may help the audience to understand that he is British artists.
Another intertexual reference was with the close up of the lips. This idea original came from us and the lyrics however looking into it the film 'Rocky Horror show' it opens with a black background and all you have to focus on was these lips. I believe this was also what we where trying to create.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body
When looking into music videos there was an image which I like, this was the looking through a mirror. Eminem uses this in his music video 'Stan' and also P!nk in 'Don't let me get me' do this but in different way.
P!nk is seen punching the mirror where Eminem is looking into the mirror. In our music video we wanted to take this image and put it in are own. we tried not to show music of "HB" real body" we just wanted the audience to see him through the mirror. This is also a key moment because the artist name comes up as a caption.
